- A Satellite Media Tour (SMT) is a technique used to provide an "expert" or celebrity to local or national television news broadcasts for live interaction, with the goal of getting a specific message out. SMTs can originate from studios in most cites, or from any location you choose. Success of an SMT depends greatly on the spokesperson and their credibility or celebrity, as well as the topic being presented.
- A Video News Release (VNR) is produced, edited and distributed to various media outlets as a complete news story. VNRs include a script, voiceover, and soundbites to tell the story. A station may use the VNR as is, or edit the VNR to include the voice of a local reporter or anchor. Because VNRs tell a complete story, they are easily adapted for public consumption
on the Internet.
There is no script or voiceover involved in a B-roll Package. A B-roll Package is simply a compilation of shots and/or soundbites that a station can use to tell or enhance a story.
- A Satellite Media Alert is a one-page document that outlines the main points of your story in a compelling, “news-friendly” way, and provides media with the instructions for acquiring your footage. The Satellite Media Alert should read like you would expect the story to read on-air.
- Slates appear at the beginning of a VNR or B-roll and describe to the media what they are about to see. In the case of a VNR, the slates are formatted from the script. In the case of a B-roll Package, the slates will reflect the information provided in the Satellite Media Alert. In both cases, consistency between slates, alert, and script is absolutely necessary.
- While satellite feeds are the traditional means of distributing video to broadcast outlets, digital distribution over the Internet and dedicated servers is fast becoming the quickest and easiest way for stations to receive your video. We offer many delivery options and will tailor our distribution approach to meet your specific needs.
-
Nielsen Sigma is an electronic verification service used for commercials, infomercials, VNRs, B-rolls, PSAs, and SMTs. It operates by encoding the date and time on your video, that code is then monitored by Nielsen throughout the country to determine which stations have
aired your video.
Other monitoring companies like VMS or Critical Mention record television and/or radio news broadcasts and provide searchable summaries of the broadcast content. Recordings made by these services are available for purchase to highlight your client’s media coverage.
- The technical specifications of the video and the actual look of the video. Not all video sources provide broadcast quality media. For example, most Internet video has been compressed to be viewed at a faster download rate, sacrificing quality in favor of speed. While the video may look fine on your computer monitor, it will not be broadcast quality for a television station. BetaSP, DigiBeta, DV, and full-resolution MPEG files are all generally considered broadcast quality sources. VHS and compressed online video is not broadcast quality.

- Electronic News Gathering – ENG Crew will be familiar with the style of shooting utilized by television news professionals and are most likely to deliver footage similar to what a news station would have shot themselves.
-
This refers to the length of time you have the crew and indicates their rate for the day. A full-day is typically 10 hours portal-to-portal, meaning from the moment the crew leaves their facility, to the moment they return to their facility, they are on the clock.
A half-day for a crew is typically 5 hours portal-to-portal. A half-day shoot, when available, is typically about two-thirds the cost of a full-day shoot.
- In the U.S., television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc), distribute news content to their local affiliate stations. A “national network newsfeed” is the stream of media (whether digital or satellite) that has been compiled by the network for use on one or more of their affiliate stations or programs.
